Expedisound, folklore from the global zone in three albums
With the Expedisound series, launched in 2004, the Marseille-based label I.O.T Records set out to build surprising bridges between cultures. Just imagine: the label's members - and their many supporters - loaded up trucks with machines, samplers, recorders and microphones, and set off to discover traditional or trance music in West Africa, Indonesia, Ulan Bator or deep in China's Yunnan.
At the crossroads of the Sound Conspiracy adventure, Real World, and Fields Recording's quasi-ethnographic but still punk attempts, Expedisound telescoped popular or folk music from the four corners of the planet with the libertarian ideals of freewheeling electronic travellers.
African Expedisound in 2003, Mongolia Expedisound in 2007, ending with China Expedisound in 2012... These albums compile miles of road, parties, encounters and, above all, sound. And it's this sonic material that is now finding a second wind: alongside the Expediso...
